Yoga

Yoga

Yoga means the realization in direct experience of the preexisting union between the individual consciousness and the universal consciousness. It is an ancient form of teaching in India, which has four traditional schools:

Jnana Yoga: Jnana Yoga is the path of knowledge, wisdom, introspection and contemplation.

Bhakti Yoga: Bhakti Yoga is the path of devotion, emotion, love, compassion, and service to God and others.

Karma Yoga: Karma Yoga is the path of action, service to others and mindfulness.

Raja Yoga: Raja Yoga is a comprehensive method that emphasizes meditation, while encompassing the whole of Yoga.

Hatha Yoga is a part of Raja Yoga and is often called “physical yoga” from which Asanas have derived.

Yoga classes in broad term here in the USA refer to posture classes. By referring to posture classes as “yoga classes” one is left with the false impression that this is the meaning of “Yoga.” It is important to understand that asanas (postures) are a small, though surely useful, part of Yoga. It would be far better, that such classes be called “posture classes” though that seems now unlikely to happen.

Yogic exercises recharge the body with cosmic energy. This facilitates:

Attainment of perfect equilibrium and harmony

Promotion of self-healing

Removal of negative blocks from the mind and toxins from the body

Enhancement of Personal power

Improvement of self-awareness

Achievement of attention, focus and concentration, especially important for children

Reduction of stress and tension in the physical body by activating the parasympathetic nervous system

Pranayama is the method of breath control. Proper breathing and awareness of the breath is very important. Your breathing directly affects the mental states. Breathing exercises help to control bodily functions. A regular, deep breath enables one to feel calm and an irregular breath can make you feel anxious. Yoga Breathing helps to re- charge the cells in the body and re- energizes the brain cells; thus, the body is rejuvenated.
